Why take training?

You are a new leader, but aren't you also a mother or a teacher - someone familiar with working with small children? You have people skills, experience in Boy Scouts or Sunday school. Why should you take training?

The Girl Scout program is a whole new world. Girl Scouting has traditions, another language, special days and special ways. The world of Girl Scouts is unique indeed. We offer programs with a purpose and training teaches you about the Girl Scout purpose and how to make your troop/group program meaningful and worthwhile.

Knowing what you are doing makes the doing easier and more fun. Interacting with other troop leaders who are also learning is an experience that will make you life-long friends and develop your abilities. Do yourself and your girls a favor - take training. You will be glad you did!

Who can attend an adult education training?

Adult education opportunities are available to any adult who is registered with the Girl Scouts - Great Plains Council.

How do I register?

Pre-registration is required for all adult education courses by completing an adult education registration form for each person. Mail the form and fees (if applicable) to:

Attn.: Training, Girl Scouts - Great Plains Council
2121 S. 44th St.
Omaha, NE 68105

You can find registration forms in the Program Book and on our website. You will receive written confirmation of your registration one week prior to the course date. Unless otherwise stated, registration closes 10 days before each course.

You may also contact us through email with your registration request to training@gpgirlscouts.org. Please include the training you wish to register for in the subject line otherwise we will not be able to register you.

What about refunds?

Fees are refundable when courses are cancelled or if notification of your cancellation is received 24 hours in advance of the course. Fees for courses which are held, but you do not attend, are forfeited unless you have notified the council 24 hours in advance. Exception: All outdoor courses require a notice of cancellation 5 days in advance for a refund to be issued.

What if I need to cancel or the course is cancelled?

Call 558-8189, extension 221 before 5 p.m., to cancel your registration. If you cannot attend, please let us know and please do not be a no-show. The absence of one participant makes a difference. Cancellation due to weather is announced on KFAB 1110 AM. In addition, cancellation of a course may occur due to low registration. When a class is cancelled by the council, our staff makes every attempt to contact each registrant by phone.

What about fees?

Most fees are paid by the council. Occasionally, a fee is charged to cover the cost of food, site expense and materials. Fees must be sent with registration forms to hold your place in a class.

Who instructs trainings?

Adult education instructors are volunteers with an interest in adult education. If selected for a trainer position, they must attend a certification workshop designed to strengthen their teaching skills. After a supervised apprenticeship in their specific area, they become certified-council instructors. If you have an interest in adult education and would like to become a volunteer council trainer, please contact the education and training director at 558-8189, 218 for details.

What if I am interested in a training that is not offered?

If you want a course not in the training calendar, take advantage of "training by request." To request a training, contact the education and training director at 558-8189, ext. 218. For a course to be added, a minimum of 10 participants is required.

What should I bring to training?

Leader guide for your program level, Safety-Wise, Volunteer Guide, paper, pen and your coffee/tea mug.

How early should I arrive at training?

Be on time! Sign-in registration begins 20 minutes before the course.

Using the Internet
Surfing the web is a big responsibility. The Girl Scouts - Great Plains Council recommends that you go online only with the supervision and approval of an adult. GSGPC has programs that teach girls how to use the web effectively for things like school work, badge and Try-It requirements, and, of course, for fun! Visit our Programs page for a look at exciting technology programs for you and your troops.
